Ayreon - Evil Devolution (Into The Electric Castle) Lyric Video

Evil Devolution is the seventh song on the second CD of Into the Electric Castle, and the fourteenth song of the entire album. Its length is 6:31. It is preceded by The Mirror Maze, and followed by The Two Gates.

Plot[]

The Voice compliments the adventurers on their accomplishments, and offers them a peek into the future, if they dare take a look, that is. The Futureman looks into the future, and is horrified by the outcome of technological development. The fusion of man and machine, likely to be on Planet Y, wherein humans have lost all emotions, makes The Futureman wonder whether he is looking at the future, or an illusion.

Lyrics[]

The future's doored ingress! What lies beyond? One of you - ah, survived so much! -- are you man enough to force this door upon its golden hinge? You craved the answer - but can you bear the truth? The door --! The Future --!

FUTUREMAN:
Our hope's dissolved
For man's evolved into another state of being
Have we 'progressed' beyond the need of feeling?

A cyber-brain
The last in the chain of man/machine alliance
Have we become the victim of our science?

Evil devolution
Is this an illusion
Out here in space
Human humiliation
This mutation
Of our human race

Is this the end
Will we transcend the need for human pleasure?
Will we abandon all our earthly treasures?

Will mankind yield
On the battlefield of natural selection
To an inorganic digital perfection?

Evil devolution
Is this an illusion
Out here in space
Human humiliation
This mutation
Of our human race
